Did you know that 64% of people would quit their new year’s resolutions by the end of January? Even more, only 9% of people actually achieve their new year’s resolutions? So, if you want to be in the top 10%, keep reading because I’m going to share some strategies and tips to help you increase your chances of success this 2024.
Make sure your new year’s resolutions are yours. Identify your why.
“People Who Have A Greater Understanding Of The Goal Purpose Have More Chances Of Accomplishing Their Plans”
Personnel Psychology
Our lives are already full of things we have to do, let’s not add to that list for the sake of it. When setting your new year’s resolutions, make sure you have a reason that is really important to you.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Is this really important to me?
- Why is it important to me? What are the reasons behind it?
- How will achieving this make me feel?
- How would it impact other areas of my life?
One of the main reasons people fail to achieve their goals or new year’s resolutions is a lack of motivation. So, if you want to increase your chances of success this year, make sure you have really clear and strong reasons (why) for your goals.
The stronger your why is, the more motivated you will be to achieve it. Additionally, being clear about your reasons will help you to decide your plan of action and help your decision making in the future.
For example, last year my new year’s resolution was to exercise regularly and eat better. My reasons for doing this were diverse, I wanted to lose weight and feel better but ultimately I wanted to build a new and healthy lifestyle for myself.
Knowing what my ultimate reason was (being healthy) was crucial because if my why was to lose weight, I could have done a crazy diet and lose weight quicker. However, because I wanted to create new and healthy behaviours, I made a plan that even though it took longer, it was sustainable in the long-term.
Turn your new year’s resolutions into action plans.
Imagine you have decided to visit your friends this weekend. They live in a city you’ve never been to. You haven’t seen them in a while so you’re super excited. So, Friday evening, you get in your car and realise that you know where you’re going, but you have no idea how to get there or how long it takes. You also haven’t made arrangements for someone to take care of your pets and plants while you are away.
This is the equivalent of setting a new year’s resolution without a plan. Yes, you may know where you’re going and you are probably super excited but your chances of success are not really high.
So, to create a plan, you need a few things:
- Long-term goal
- Milestones along the way
- Steps for each milestone
- Plan of action for your steps:
- How will you do it?
- How long would it take?
- When are you going to do it?
You can make your plan even tighter by thinking about:
- Possible challenges and solutions to these challenges.
- Tracking progress to keep motivation high.

A few more things to increase your chances of success this 2024:
Before you start with your action plan, let me share a few more tips that will help you increase your chances of success.
- Create challenging but realistic goals. Specific and challenging goals led to higher performance than easy goals, “do your best” goals, or no goals.
- Writing your goals down with as much detail as you can makes you more likely to achieve them.
- Find an accountability partner “People have a 65 percent chance of reaching a goal if they have an accountability partner.”
Final thoughts
Whatever your new year’s resolutions are, you deserve to achieve them. The fact that only 9% achieve them might not seem super inspiring but it should be, because first of all, that 9% is showing that it’s possible and second of all, who says you cannot be part of that 9%? I definitely believe you can and that is why I am organising a FREE workshop to create a detailed action plan step by step.
Sign up here for the FREE workshop on the 8th of January.
Or if you can’t join the workshop but you still want to be part of the elite 9%, don’t worry, you can sign up to my accountability newsletter with weekly tips, strategies, motivation and encouragement to help you succeed this 2024!
